Miguel Fernández Maroto (Valladolid, 1988) is Architect (2012), Master of Research in Architecture (2014, Premio Extraordinario) and PhD in Architecture (2019, Mención Internacional, Premio Extraordinario) from the University of Valladolid, where he is currently Associate Professor at the School of Architecture, in the Department of Urban Planning and Representation of Architecture. His work focuses on urban planning techniques and tools, taking into account both its recent history and current lines of innovation.

He conducts his research acticity (recognised for a period of six years by ANECA-CNEAI) as an ordinary member of the Research Group “Urban and Regional Planning” and of the Instituto Universitario de Urbanística (IUU) at the University of Valladolid, of which he is the current academic secretary. As a professor in the section of Urban and Regional Planning, he teaches in courses of the Bachelor of Architecture (coordinating “Planning of New Areas”, 5^th year), the Master of Architecture and the Master of Research and Innovation in Architecture. He is also a member of the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Programme in Architecture, and of the Teaching Innovation Group “Patrimonios Urbanos”, which was awarded with the Premio Consejo Social UVa de Innovación Educativa in 2017.

He has got published in journals such as “Territorio”, “Journal of Urban History”, “Planning Perspectives”, “Ciudad y Territorio: Estudios Territoriales”, “Zarch”, “EGA-Expresión Gráfica Arquitectónica”, “Bitácora Urbano Territorial”, “Proyecto, Progreso, Arquitectura” and “Ciudades”, and he has participated in international conferences such as “VII Congreso ISUF-H” (2023), “19th IPHS Conference” (2022), “Récits de ville. Usages de l’histoire et changement urbain” (2019), “54th ISOCARP Congress” (2018), “Young urban(H)IST Conference” (2018), “9th EURAU Congress” (2018), “24th ISUF Conference” (2017) and “Inventer le Grand Paris : regards croisés sur les métropoles des années 1970 à l’an 2000” (2016).

He has leaded the project “Applied development of the NIM-MIUB tool for the evaluation of urban regeneration actions through a pilot study in the Entrevías neighbourhoods (León)”, funded by the University of Valladolid, and participates and has participated in projects funded by the European Horizon 2020 programme (2ISECAP, INTENSSS-PA) and by the Spanish State Plan (URBAN.Baukultur, PER-START, PUH-RePlan). He has also taken part in other IUU works such as the drafting of the Guidelines for the adaptation and promotion of the Spanish Urban Agenda in Castilla y León in a context of recovery and resilience (JCyL, 2021), the elaboration of the base document of the Strategy for the Energy Transition in the cities of Castilla y León (JCyL, 2020), the study on strategies for the promotion of a new model of housing policy in Castilla y León (CESCyL, 2017) and the analysis of management principles and planning instruments for the protection of traditional architecture of rural municipalities in Spain (Ministry of Culture, 2016).

In 2018 he was visiting scholar at the Dipartimento di Architettura e Studi Urbani (DAStU) in Politecnico di Milano. He is a member of the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP), the International Planning History Society (IPHS) and the International Seminar on Urban Form – hispanic (ISUF-H).
