Durante estos días, del 5 al 11 de abril de 2014 se está celebrando en la ciudad de Medellín, Colombia, la Séptima Sesión del Foro Urbano Mundial organizado por UN Habitat. Cada dos años, este foro se convierte en un evento clave para la comunidad internacional, reuniendo a un amplio número de participantes de todo el mundo para debatir sobre los principales desafíos urbanos a que se enfrenta el mundo actualmente.

Los temas de debate en esta ocasión girarán alrededor del siguiente eje temático: “Igualdad urbana y desarrollo – Ciudades por la Vida” (Cities for life).

El Foro Urbano Mundial (WUF por sus siglas en inglés de World Urban Forum) es la Principal Conferencia Mundial en Ciudades, World’s Premier Conference on Cities, organizada cada dos años. Se trata de un Foro técnico no-legislativo que convoca el Programa de Asentamientos Humanos de Naciones Unidas (ONU-Habitat) para examinar los retos que enfrenta el mundo en relación a los asentamientos humanos, como la rápida urbanización y su impacto en en las ciudades, comunidades, economías, cambio climático y políticas.

El WUF promueve la intensa participación de los socios de la Agenda Habitat y de programas internacionales relevantes, fondos y agencias, garantizando así su inclusión en la identificación de nuevos temas, el intercambio de las lecciones aprendidas y el intercambio de buenas prácticas y buenas políticas. El Foro reúne una larga lista de expertos de todos los ámbitos de la vida para contribuir a los debates. Entre los participantes del WUF se incluyen –aunque no únicamente- gobiernos nacionales, regionales y locales, organizaciones no gubernamentales, organizaciones de la sociedad civil, profesionales, instituciones de investigación y universidades, profesionales, sector privado, instituciones de financiación en el desarrollo, fundaciones, medios de comunicación, organizaciones de Naciones Unidas y otras agencias internacionales.

Este año, la Séptima sesión del Foro Urbano Mundial tendrá lugar del 5 al 11 de abril en la ciudad de Medellín, en la región de Antioquia, en Colombia. Con el apoyo de la Alcaldía de Medellín y el Gobierno de Colombia, Medellín acogerá el WUF7, mostrando un paisaje urbano inspirador y reconocido con premios a los más de 10.000 participantes que se esperan, representando 160 países. Los participantes tienen cita en el centro de exposiciones de la ciudad, Plaza Mayor, durante seis días de debates sobre el tema principal de la conferencia: Equidad Urbana en el Desarrollo-Ciudades para la Vida.

Medellín, como ejemplo internacional de transformación urbana a través del urbanismo social, se convertirá en un ‘laboratorio urbano’ durante los días del WUF7. Tanto a nivel institucional y de infraestructuras, Medellín ha ejemplificado su atención a las comunidades más vulnerables con soluciones de acceso a la movilidad, con una governanza inclusiva y con educación de calidad, sumado a la recuperación del espacio público y áreas verdes en la ciudad.

La Séptima session del Foro Urbano Mundial también será una primera oportunidad para discutir el estado de las ciudades de hoy en día, aportando contenido substantivo al proceso de preparación de la Agenda de Desarrollo Post-2015 y a la revisión de la agenda urbana camino a Habitat III en 2016. El Foro también liderará los esfuerzos en divulgación del desarrollo urbano sostenible y equitativo, posicionando los temas en la agenda política y mediática.

The World Urban Youth Assembly provides young people all over the world with the opportunity to discuss and deliberate on urban issues important to them, so that they are able to make relevant contributions at the substantive dialogues at the main Forum. The Assembly is not only informative but also maintains its status as the premier urban youth platform for deliberating on urban youth issues. The Gender Equality Action Assembly is a dynamic and multi-stakeholder event, bringing together Habitat Agenda partners and enables them to meet, explore and learn ways of strengthening gender equality in international, regional and national policies and programmes related to human settlement issues. The WUF7 theme is “Urban Equity in Development – Cities for Life”. The Dialogues are the high profile events at the Forum where the overall theme is debated at the level of few subthemes by a high level panel of speakers with different backgrounds, including interactions from the audience. An array of Roundtable meetings will be held by peer groups for each of the main constituencies of Habitat Agenda Partners. Networking events are organized by partners such as governments, local authorities, civil society organizations, community representatives, the private sector, intergovernmental and national organizations, academics, UN bodies and others. The networking event format provides an opportunity to build knowledge, strengthen partnerships and networks through sharing ideas and identifying best practices in an effort to advance sustainable urban development in cities and towns around the globe. ‘I’m a City Changer’ is about giving the voice to people and cities to propose positive solutions to urban challenges. A range of ‘City Changer’ activities demonstrating the engagement of citizens in actions towards sustainable cities will take place at the Forum. Those will take place in the City Changer room within the UN-Habitat exhibition and other venues in the city of Medellin.
