Not only market

How activities of consumption modify space, identity and practices of urban design and planning
A wide range of consumption and exchange related activities have a major role in defining urban space and places. These activities are actually able to change the image, the identity and the shape of the urban space. The contemporary city is a complex entity where many kinds of physical and virtual infrastructures, flows of representations, social relationships and networks coexist and mutate continuously. Consequently, the task of policies and urban planning, which try to observe and interpret a renovated urbanity, is increasingly hard.
The aim of the seminar, opened by Corinna Morandi. is to stimulate a multi and inter-disciplinary debate on the redefinition of spaces and places as a consequence of new consumption practices and services. The occasion for this debate is the presentation of two books: “Planning and place in the city. Mapping place identity” (Routledge 2013). by Marichela Sepe. and “Nuovi itinerari del consumo. Gli outlet village tra esperienza dello shopping e dinamiche territoriali” (Maggioli 2013). by Chiara Rabbiosi. The books concern key topics such as placemaking, spatial dimension of the practices of consumption, and tools of analysis and interpretation of such phenomena.
